Alex Kirk is a web application programmer and experienced lead of remote teams, based in Vienna, Austria.
I received my MSc in Computer Sciences from the Technical University of Vienna in 2005.
From 2006 to 2008 I worked for Netvibes in Paris, after that I worked as a freelance developer for various projects. Since 2014, I’m working with Automattic.
For six years I led the team responsible for making all Automattic assets (for example WordPress.com, Jetpack, apps) translatable and localized. Since 2022, I’ve been leading a team contributing to WordPress.org – first on Matrix and internationalization, then Data Liberation, and now WordPress Playground.
I’m fluent in German (native) and English, well-traveled, and have led very diverse international teams (across almost all timezones) in English. I also have some background in Latin and Ancient Greek, and bits and pieces of many other languages.
In my personal time, I created and maintain the Friends Plugin and the Enable Mastodon Apps plugin which I believe can help us return to the original idea of a decentralized web. On this site you can learn about these and other plugins that I created as well as talks and podcasts.
