# About

Welcome to my blog where I post about web and programming related topics. I write
my posts in English and in professional life (working with Automattic), I speak 
English all day. While I have British roots (still visible in my last name), I am
actually a native German speaker from Vienna, Austria.

Some quick facts about me:

 * Passionate about using Open Source software and enabling people to take more 
   control over their digital lives (see [Why My WordPress](https://alex.kirk.at/2026/04/14/why-my-wordpress/)).
 * Working with [Automattic](https://automattic.com/) since 2014.
 * MSc in Computer Sciences from the [Technical University of Vienna](https://www.tuwien.at/)(
   2005).

A quick reflection on my time with Automattic:

 * For six years I led the team responsible for making all Automattic assets (for
   example [WordPress.com](http://WordPress.com), [Jetpack](https://jetpack.com/),
   apps) translatable and localized.
 * Since 2022, I’ve been leading a team contributing to [WordPress.org](https://wordpress.org/)–
   first on [Matrix](https://make.wordpress.org/project/2023/11/30/embracing-matrix-for-enhanced-communication/)
   and internationalization, then [Data Liberation](https://wordpress.org/data-liberation/),
   and now [WordPress Playground](https://wordpress.org/playground/).
 * In 2026, I created [my.wordpress.net](https://my.wordpress.net) and am advocating
   for using WordPress for more than just public sites on the internet.

From 2006 to 2008 I worked for [Netvibes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netvibes)
in Paris, so I speak some rudimentary French but not more, I actually learnt Latin
and Ancient Greek in school.
